Un Chien Andalou →
Un Chien Andalou (1928) Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí is a 16-minute surrealist film released in 1929 in Paris. It is one of the best-known surrealist films of the French avant-garde film movement of the 1920s. It is also considered one of the most prominent films in Spanish Surrealism. It stars Simone Mareuil and Pierre Batcheff as the unnamed protagonists.

Billy Childish: Poet, painter, singer, dreamer. →
My dad just gave me the book ‘Chatham Town Welcomes Desperate Men’ by Billy Childish ‘British arts biggest enigma’ inscribed to me and my brother from many years ago and I can conclusively say that it is some of the best (and most uncompromising) poetry that I have ever come across.

Perfection
What is perfection? Perfection is attainable realistically through anti-realism only. Abstract nouns such as perfection and love, for example, are meaningless without a subjective understanding as none are concrete but for a concept. Anti-realism rejects the necessity for physicality and instead favours the perception of the witness as to the the actual being of the subject. This may in turn...

The Decomposition of the Bible
Q: Can you explain your work?
A: I've fundamentally created a concept that is the juxtaposition of an ideal and a reality.
Q: Can you be more specific?
A: What do you want to know?
Q: Well, what inspired you to create the work?
A: I wasn't so much inspired as provoked to create what I did.
Q: By what?
A: Anything.
Q: In particular.
A: There are examples everywhere, from the piece itself to politics to religion to relationships...
Q: What, so this is contrasting the ideals of these things with their realities?
A: Yeah
Q: So there seems to be a strong religious theme.
A: There is, but there are pins, metaphors and doctrines attached to every torso, real or fake.
Q: Okay, I can see that your trying to remain ambiguous.
A: Yeah, but intentionally so, I want you to tell me what you think it is because I'm not there to explain things for you all the time.
Q: But in your work you need to show that you can control how its read, surely?
A: Yes, but its not just a piece of art, its also a part of life. It is a piece of art in your life, just another occurrence. It is just a piece of art by Stevieray, its not 'my piece of art' to you, is it? No, its just an event in your life that your brain should interpret as any other, thats the whole point, if you say "I don't get it", then its you that's missed it, not me.
Q: Well I'm sure that I, and many other people will interpret it as an attack on religion...
A: Why?
Q: Well because you've destroyed the Bible, a religious text, to create this, which is a very strong image or visual message which a lot of people aren't going to like.
A: But I don't see it as being destroyed. I believe that it has retained its integrity as far as it had before I dismantled its physical form. It has just taken a different form. Its not an anti-anything piece of work, rather a coincidental representation of a chain of cause and effect that has brought us to where we are today, right here, right now.
Q: Yes..
A: Good
Q: But I think that you...
A: Good, its got you thinking.
Q: No, but what I mean is that you have to show that you've considered everything or its not art right?
A: The fact that it exists shows that there is a good chance that I have, and even then I either have or I haven't. Its 50/50 odds, thats good enough for me.

Just a little something that a friend sent me: “The controversy in itself springs from whether or not you believe the art ‘happenings’ created by Voina to be art in the truest sense, or whether they function simply as high-concept acts of vandalism – so far, they’ve thrown cats at McDonalds workers “to alieviate their boredom”, painted an enormous phallus onto a 65-metre drawbridge in St...

Nostalgia: The Attraction of the Museum
No matter when in history, there will always be nostalgia for times gone by, whether those times are ours or not. Art however may break the restraints that these feelings put in place, certainly in a contemporary sense as even the Renaissance pushed forward through the guise of something retrospective. It is forward thinking, regardless (and perhaps in spite of) this most natural of human...
